Shopping in Jaipur
Jaipur is well known for its blue pottery, brass articles, enamel work, cotton and woollen fabrics and rugs, exquisite carpets, leather goods and intricate jewellery pieces studded with precious and semi precious stones. Traditional jewellery – like minakari and kundan work – is available in fine designs of gold or silver. Minakari has enamel paintwork while kundan has embedded gems. Jaipur will also mesmerise you with its brilliant fabrics. Cotton material and Kota saris are available in different varieties with traditional Sanganeri prints and designs created using tie-dye methods.
Jaipur offers a wide range of souvenirs that you can gift to family and friends. You could shop at popular spots like M.I. Road, Johari Bazaar and Rajasthali, and a few other local markets.
Our Jaipur Shopping Guide below will tell you the best places to shop in Jaipur. Whilst shopping in Jaipur is fun and rewarding, it can also be tiring, so be sure to refuel at one of the great Jaipur restaurants. We also have some general India shopping information.
Jaipur Shopping Guide
The Colourful Markets of Jaipur
Johari Bazaar or the Jewellery Market is home to shops that deal in gemstones of both the precious and semi-precious varieties. In the lanes of Jaipur, particularly in Haldiyon-ka-rasta, Jadiyon-ka-rasta, and Gopalji-ka-rasta, you can watch the skilled craftsmen create beautiful bright pieces of minakari and kundan jewellery. Badi Chupar and M.I. Road are also popular shopping zones.
Fabric, Tie and Dye Prints and Sanganer Prints
Beautiful colourful patterns are created on fabric by using two popular methods, namely the tie-dye and block printing. The fabric is tied up at different places and then dyed in multiple colours to create unique patterns using Bandhej or tie-dye method. In block printing, uniform patterns are created on the fabric by using hard-carved wooden blocks dipped in natural dyes. Sanganer specialises in block carving and printing. Badi Chaupar and other shops lining the Johari Bazaar are the best when it comes to shopping for fabric. Do check them out.
Stone Carving, Lac Bangles, Leather, Antiques and Quilts
Jaipur is also famous for its lightweight quilts, leather products and lac items, especially bangles, curios and sculptures. The popular and busy area around the Hawa Mahal abounds with Jaipur shops dealing in quilts and antiques. If you are interested in lac bangles, you can find them at the Tripolia Bazaar; if it is leather goods you’re looking for, then Ramgani Bazaar is the place to go. Excellent pieces of stone and marble carvings can be bought from Khajanewalon-ka-rasta, which is located close to the Chandpole Bazaar.
Signature Blue Ceramic Pottery and Other Handicrafts
The Rajasthali Emporium located on M.I. Road offers a wide range of unique decorative handicrafts like carpets, dhurries, blue pottery ware, and brass articles that are a speciality of this region. You can adorn your home with a few of these items.
Sweetshops in Jaipur
A whole range of traditional sweets are available at Jaipur to satiate your sweet tooth. Try out the local sweets and snacks at the famous LMB Hotel.
Haats or Local Rajasthani Bazaars
Apart from the standard markets, local bazaars or fairs are a regular weekly or monthly event where people from the neighbouring villages set up shop to trade their local produce and other goods. This event, its festive atmosphere and even the goods sold here have not changed much from the olden times.
